Located 5.6 miles southwest of the city, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main air hub of the Netherlands. It covers an area of 2,787 hectares in Haarlemmermeer municipality, which lies in the North Holland province.
With a few barracks and a field that served as a runway, the airport began its journey in 1916 as a military aviation base. After the completion of the terminal in 1949, it turned into a full-fledged complex for air passenger and cargo transportation.
According to IATA, the Amsterdam Airport code is AMS and its ICAO indicator is EHAM. As a popular destination for travellers from all over the world, it served 266,967 aircraft movements and 52,472,188 passengers in 2021. This allowed it to become the third busiest air hub in Europe.

Currently, arriving passengers are not required to provide a negative test. However, all travellers must adhere to basic health safety rules:
As an exception to the general rule, passengers travelling to destinations requiring a negative test must be tested within the facility. Also, when you transfer at Amsterdam Airport, covid testing is required if you will be visiting China. The testing site is located near gate D10 on D-pier.
Keep in mind that you need to sign up for the test online in advance -- this will allow you to get tested before transferring onto a flight to China.
Amsterdam Airport terminals are presented with three large lobbies under one roof. All sections radiate from Schiphol Plaza, forming a convenient infrastructure for moving around.
According to the concept, the piers and concourses of every hall have walkways. Therefore, you can get into another section from either side of security. However, border inspection separates the Schengen and non-Schengen areas. Also, the low-cost pier M constitutes an exception, as it does not allow passengers access to any other section after passing security.
Departure hall 1 at Schiphol houses two separate piers - Piers B and C, both serving the Schengen area. Also, it features Pier D, which is partially included in Departure hall 2. In general, passengers have 14 gates in Pier B, and 21 gates in Pier C.
As part of AMS International Airport, Departure Hall 2 consists of Piers D and E. Pier D is the largest single section within the facility. The lower level serves the non-Schengen area, while Schengen flights are available on the upper floor. Non-Schengen Gates are numbered D-1 to D-57. Meanwhile, Schengen gates start with D-59.
Pier E handles exclusively non-Schengen flights. Its 14 gates are used by airlines belonging to the SkyTeam international alliance. KLM, Delta Air Lines, China Southern Airlines, and China Airlines are among them. Other carriers operating out of Pier E include Etihad Airways, Air Astana, Iran Air, and EVA Air.
You can find three piers in Departure Hall 3 - F, G, and H/M. Pier F is occupied by many operators from the SkyTeam group. It offers 8 gates for non-Schengen flights.
Pier G has 13 gates and serves the non-Schengen area. The list of airlines arriving/departing from this pier includes Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, etc.
Forming a single concourse with 7 shared gates, Piers H and M accept low-cost airlines. EasyJet, Jet2.com, Flybe, and Norwegian Air Shuttle are among them. The only difference between the piers is that Pier H serves the non-Schengen area, while Pier M is dedicated to Schengen flights.
If you look at the Schiphol Airport map and its terminals, you will see the unified building that consists of three sections branching off from the central part. All necessary on-site services are within easy reach. Check-in desks are available in the departure halls. At the same time, self-service kiosks can be found at Schiphol Plaza, the airport's main foyer. Information displays are located in each of the three sections as well. To navigate the facility easily, check out the Amsterdam Airport map of the terminal below.

The number of operators could be bigger - if you want to know more info, you can find it at Schiphol Airport Airlines. Labour shortages have led to some chaos, especially during times of high demand. Schiphol Airport queues, delays, and cancellations have become commonplace. To deal with the situation, AMS has introduced a limit on daily passenger movements since June 2022. As a result, travelling through this air hub has now become more comfortable and hassle-free.
Another issue that negatively affects the operation of the airport from time to time is the weather. The specificity of the local climate causes strong winds during the summer period. In turn, they create turbulent currents that sometimes make it dangerous for aircraft to land and take off. This is why Schiphol Airport delays and cancellations are also major problems travellers may face.
Despite some peculiarities, AMS is a safe and comfortable place to fly from. Thus, you can start planning your flight and trip with a sense of confidence and safety.
